A Spanish Send-Off: Where to Take the Bride-to-Be

If you’re the maid of honour or have been entrusted with setting up the entire hen party, then you’re probably here because you’ve frantically started searching the net in a blind panic beneath the pressure of it all. Breathe in, breathe out and relax, because you’ll soon find that it isn’t as fearsome as it all sounds, because once you find the perfect destination, the rest will simply fall right into place. But you ask ‘what is this destination if my mind is a complete blank?!’

You’ll be happy to know that one country has it all in one place, you just have to choose the city (sorry I can’t do it all for you!) and that country is everyone’s favourite – Spain. Diverse enough to cater to any hen, let me take you through Hen Heaven’s most popular picks of this sun-kissed European country.

Barcelona

Let’s start with a sure fire hit: the second most visited city in Europe after Paris, a Barcelona hen do ticks all of the boxes. It’s relatively quick to get to, brings the sun for a pre-wedding tan and even packs in a beach. There’s bars, clubs, incredible food and for anyone in search of a bit of culture, the architecture is to die for.

Must Go: Head to Las Ramblas – arguably the most bustling and exciting part of Barcelona, this long strip can be your central point for the big night or a day of sipping sangria and watching the street performers. Also, mark down La Sagrada Familia on the map to see (and go up if your head isn’t to dizzy) one of the most breath-taking buildings in the world.

Benidorm & Valencia

I’ve put these two together because if you get a little bit adventurous, you can easily travel between them both to sample two different sides of Spain in a hen celebration packed with sun, sea and a whole lot of nightlife. First up is the Benidorm hen party  – the old British favourite that is still going on strong. Wondering why? Well the 800 bars and clubs here might give you are reason or… well, 800. As for Valencia, this is another place known for its great nightlife, but also its food – being the spiritual home of Paella… just make sure you can still fit in that wedding dress!

Must Go: Well I’ve already mentioned Benidorm’s 800+ bars, but there is also the chance to enjoy a ‘natural’ spa day at the Algar waterfalls and in Valencia, why not get your upcoming marriage blessed at the Cathedral… it is said to be the home of the Holy Grail.

Madrid

There’s no way to include Barcelona and overlook Madrid – it is the capital of Spain afterall, and if you avoid the draw of Las Ramblas and the beach, you’ll be rewarded with a hen weekend to shout to all of your friends about. No beach, but it’s replaced with a shoppers dream and a beautiful setting to really take in the Spanish sun, with Madrid enjoying the most cloudless days over anywhere in Europe.

Must Go: If you feel like relieving your hangover with a bit of culture then head straight to Museo del Prado – one of the most famous museums in the world and something you can actually tell your parents about!

… and the Rest

The above has just scraped the surface of Spain, because if none of the above is inspiring you with the answer to your maid-of-honour-duty troubles, then you’ve got Seville, Tenerife, Benalmadena and who could forget – Ibiza, to fall back on. If that isn’t good enough for you, then the hen is in serious trouble! Spain packs it all in and then some.
