5 South American Destinations for Backpackers

There aren’t any better places on the planet for backpackers than South America. This beautiful continent offers easy traveling with buses running to every corner of it. It is very cheap, allowing backpackers to see and do a lot with small budgets. There is so much to see and do here that it can be overwhelming for first-time backpackers in South America. To help them decide where to go, here are five great South American destinations for backpackers.

Machu Picchu, Peru

Any list of the ultimate travel destinations for backpackers in South America has to begin with Machu Picchu. This amazing site of ancient-Inca ruins is among the most-desired travel destinations on the planet. Backpackers will enjoy the five-day hike on the Inca Trail that they will make to get here. The treks to the ruins are timed so that the backpackers get to Machu Picchu in time for sunrise, which is one of the most beautiful sights on Earth.

Cartagena, Colombia

This is the most beautiful city in Colombia. Set on the Caribbean Coast, Cartagena is one of the oldest cities in South America. The colonial architecture in the heart of the city is breath-taking. The people are very friendly, and backpackers will enjoy the festive atmosphere that permeates the town at all times. Be sure to enjoy one of the lovely sailing trips to the secluded San Blas islands that lie between Cartagena and Panama.

Iguazu Falls, Brazil

The falls technically lie on the border of Brazil and Argentina, but all the best views of the falls are on the Brazil side of the border. The falls are the largest in the Western Hemisphere, and the sheer fury of their thunder is enough to impress even the most worldly of travellers. Be sure to bring a camera to the Iguazu Falls, as the constant mist creates numerous opportunities to see rainbows. Though Iguazu Falls lies deep in the heart of the jungle, there are plenty of backpacker hostels in the area.

Patagonia, Argentina

This is without a doubt one of the most magical locations on Earth. Patagonia almost seems like it could be located on another planet. It is just so different than most other places that backpackers visit in South America. The stunning landscapes are surrounded by beautiful mountains. Backpackers will enjoy the opportunity to climb on some of the most beautiful glaciers in the world. Don’t forget to head all the way to the southern tip of Patagonia, where the only land further south is Antarctica.

Salar De Ayuni, Bolivia

Backpackers will feel like they just stepped into a dream when they first see the magical salt flats at Ayuni. During the dry season, these are the large salt flats in the world. When the rainy season comes around, a shallow layer of water coats them. The water is so shallow that visitors can drive or walk all over them. The thin layer of water crates the optical illusion that visitors are walking on water, which makes for some amazing photos.

  1. Hi,

My name is KC Owens, I’m a college student and I love to travel! While cruising the Internet, I found your site and really enjoyed reading your posts. I have been to countries all over Europe with just my backpack and a camera. Since I am a college student and I have significant bills, it can be difficult to find ways to travel the world. However, I have done this several times, with less than ten pounds of luggage and while on a college dime!

I was hoping that you would allow me to write a post for your site to share my tips and tricks with your readers. I put a lot of time into my traveling, it is my biggest passion and I would love to inspire others by sharing my stories, mistakes and triumphs. I look forward to hearing from you!

    Best,

    KC Owens
